Chapter Eight

I DON’T KNOW WHAT WAKES ME UP. There are no loud noises or unusual motions. The carriage continues to roll forward and Keldrin remains unconscious on the bench. But something makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

I lift the curtain of the carriage to look outside. We’re in the middle of a dirt road, wide enough for two carriages to pass side by side. Nothing is out of ordinary, yet I can’t make myself release the coarse fabric of the curtain.

I’m about to return to my position beside Keldrin when the carriage lurches. My head bumps against the opposite side of the carriage wall before I steady myself. The neighing of the horse precedes a sudden stop of the carriage.

I yank open the door and jump outside. Razen and Xander already have their weapons in hand, glaring at the figure in a hooded cloak blocking the center of the road.

There are only a couple of other travelers on the road besides us. They back away from us and run the other direction.

My pulse races as I stare at the cloaked figure. That single person makes my skin crawl more than the dozen demons earlier. When he lifts his hood to uncover his face, I know the reason.

He’s Drake.

“Adriana, I thought I would find you here.” Drake grins.

This road is the main path to Airea Kingdom.

“What do you want?” I ask, wondering if there is a chance that Drake hasn’t gotten together with Father yet.

“You see, I need your help.”

I tilt my head. If possible, I don’t want to get into a fight with Drake. Drake would be harder to stop than the demon guards.

“If you tell me where Sebastian went with the Demon King scepter, I’ll let you go,” he says.

“You mean Sebastian escaped?” I take a step forward. Relief makes me smile. “You asked the wrong person. I have no idea where he is.”

“Really?”

“Yes.” I affirm with a nod.

“Then I’m afraid I have to take you back.” He holds his scepter horizontally in front of his chest in a position ready for attack.

“Why?” My hand grips tightly to my own scepter.

“Because Sebastian will return for you.”

“You don’t know that!”

He ignores me and turns to Razen and Xander. “I’m taking her. Do you have a problem with that?”

Rage makes my hands tremble. I want to yell at Drake that I’m still here, and Razen and Xander don’t own me. I don’t understand why he would ask them for me.

Razen rolls his shoulders. “Are you here to cause trouble today?”

“Not for you.” Drake smiles.

“Then be my guest.”

Although I was the one who wanted to tag along to accompany Keldrin, I can’t help but feel sad when Razen gives up on me without a second thought. All I want to do is be with Keldrin until he’s healed. Is that too much to ask?

“Adriana, do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?” Drake turns his gaze to me.

I purse my lips. After a moment of silence, I say, “Drake, give me a couple of weeks.
